Itinerary

Day 1: Zanzibar to Central Serengeti

Depart from Zanzibar Airport on a morning flight directly to Seronera Airstrip in the heart of the Serengeti. Meet your guide and begin a game drive through the central plains, focusing on the large concentrations of big cats and elephants around the Seronera River valley.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site before continuing the drive toward your camp in the late afternoon for dinner and rest.

Overnight: Tamba Tented Camp  or similar mid-range accommodation.

Meal Plan: Lunch and Dinner

Head out at dawn for a full-day game drive to maximize chances of seeing predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs while they are most active.

Depending on the season, track the Great Migration herds across the open grasslands or visit the Retima Hippo Pool to observe large pods of hippos.

Stop for a mid-day break in a shaded area of the park before exploring the rocky kopjes where lions often rest during the heat of the day.

Overnight: Tamba Tented Camp  or similar mid-range accommodation.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

After an early breakfast, take a final shorter game drive through the Serengeti to spot any wildlife missed on previous days.

Transfer to the airstrip for your flight to Arusha Airport to continue your safari tour or for a further transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight home.

Meal Plan: Breakfast

Key Information for 2026 Travelers

  • Flights: Flights usually depart Zanzibar between 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM.

  • Luggage: Strict 15kg limit in soft-sided bags is required for the bush planes.

  • Inclusions: Park fees, bush lunches, and professional guiding are included in the daily flow.

Optional Serengeti Safari Extensions

If you have more time or want to experience the Serengeti from a different perspective, you can customize your 3-day itinerary with these popular additions.

Hot Air Balloon Safari (Morning Add-on)

Instead of a standard morning game drive on Day 2 or 3, take a sunrise flight over the Serengeti plains.

  • The Experience: Drift above the savannah at dawn for a bird’s-eye view of the wildlife, followed by a champagne “bush breakfast” under an acacia tree.

  • Timing: This adds about 4 hours to your morning schedule before you reconnect with your guide for the rest of the day.

Extend to 5 Days (More Serengeti Time)

Add two extra days to explore different regions of the park, such as the Western Corridor or the Northern Mara River area.

  • Why Extend? The Serengeti is vast. Extra days allow you to spend more time tracking specific sightings like a leopard hunt or a Great Migration river crossing without rushing back to the airstrip.

  • Overnight: Two additional nights at a mobile migration camp or luxury lodge.

Included:

  • Flight from Zanzibar to Serengeti, and the flight from Serengeti to Arusha

  • All national park fees and conservation taxes.

  • Professional, expert local guides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to do a Serengeti day trip from Zanzibar?

A same-day return from Zanzibar to the Serengeti is not feasible due to flight schedules. Most bush planes arrive in the Serengeti midday and do not offer return flights the same afternoon. A 2-night/3-day itinerary is the shortest recommended duration to ensure quality game-viewing time.

Direct flights from Zanzibar (ZNZ) to Serengeti airstrips like Seronera (SEU) typically take between 1 hour 45 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes. Flight times may vary slightly if the bush plane makes scheduled stops at other airstrips, such as Arusha or Manyara, to pick up or drop off passengers.

For a 3-day safari, Seronera Airstrip (SEU) is the best choice. Located in Central Serengeti, it offers year-round resident wildlife and high concentrations of big cats. If traveling for the Great Migration between July and October, you may consider flying into Kogatende Airstrip in the North.

Due to the small size of Cessna Caravan bush planes, passengers are restricted to 15kg (33lbs) per person, including hand luggage. All baggage must be soft-sided (no hard frames or wheels) to fit into the aircraft’s pod. Most hotels in Zanzibar offer luggage storage for items you don’t need in the bush.

Most all-inclusive fly-in packages include return flights from Zanzibar, professional private guiding, 4×4 safari vehicle use, Serengeti National Park entrance fees, all meals (bush lunches and lodge dinners), and luxury tented accommodation. Contact us for a customized quote.

The experience focuses on efficiency and immersion. Instead of spending two days driving from Arusha, you land directly in the park and begin game viewing within 15 minutes of leaving the airstrip. You will travel in a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for 360-degree views, staying in high-end tented camps that place you right in the middle of the natural sounds of the savannah.
