Tour Plan
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp – Rainforest Beginnings
Start at Machame Gate (1,800m) after a briefing, trekking 11 km through lush rainforest. Spot colobus monkeys and vibrant flora as you ascend to Machame Camp (2,850m). Enjoy a hot dinner prepared by your crew, settling into tents under the forest canopy. This moderate 5-7 hour hike kicks off your Kilimanjaro adventure with natural beauty.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp – Moorland Vistas
Climb 5 km from Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,750m), transitioning from rainforest to moorland. The 4-6 hour trek offers stunning views of Shira Plateau and Mount Meru. Rest at camp with a warm meal, acclimatizing to the altitude as the landscape opens up, revealing Kilimanjaro’s vastness under a starlit sky.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp – Lava Tower Acclimatization
Trek 10 km over 7-8 hours from Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,900m) via Lava Tower (4,600m). Ascend for acclimatization, then descend through alpine desert to the scenic Barranco Valley. Marvel at the towering Barranco Wall ahead. After a hearty dinner, rest in tents surrounded by rugged terrain, preparing for the next challenge on this diverse route.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp – Wall & Valley Trek
Scale the Barranco Wall on a 5 km, 4-6 hour hike to Karanga Camp (3,995m). Navigate steep scrambles with breathtaking views, descending into Karanga Valley. Enjoy lunch en route and dinner at camp, acclimatizing further. The day’s moderate effort rewards you with dramatic scenery and a sense of progress toward Kilimanjaro’s summit.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp – Summit Base Prep
Trek 4 km over 4-5 hours from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m), your summit base. Cross barren alpine desert, conserving energy for the ascent. Arrive at camp, eat an early dinner, and rest in tents as guides brief you for the midnight summit push. The stark, rocky landscape heightens anticipation for Uhuru Peak.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp – Summit Day
Begin at midnight, climbing 5 km to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) in 6-8 hours through scree and snow. Reach Africa’s highest point at sunrise, savoring the triumph. Descend 10 km to Mweka Camp (3,100m) over 5-7 hours, passing Barafu. Exhausted but elated, enjoy a celebratory dinner and sleep in tents, surrounded by rainforest after the longest, most rewarding day.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Descent & Farewell
Descend 10 km from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640m) in 3-5 hours through lush rainforest. Collect your summit certificate, bid farewell to your crew, and transfer back to Arusha or Moshi. Reflect on your “Whiskey Route” triumph with a well-earned rest, ending your Kilimanjaro journey on a high note.
