Tour Plan

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut – Rainforest Start

Begin at Marangu Gate (1,860m) after a briefing, hiking 8 km through dense rainforest to Mandara Hut (2,700m). The 3-4 hour trek reveals monkeys and lush greenery. Settle into dormitory-style huts, enjoying a hot dinner prepared by your crew. This gentle ascent eases you into the climb with a comfortable first night.

Trek 11 km from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m) over 5-7 hours, leaving rainforest for moorland. Enjoy views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks as the landscape opens up. Rest in Horombo’s huts after a warm meal, acclimatizing to the altitude with a peaceful night surrounded by heather and distant mountain vistas.

Spend a day at Horombo Hut (3,720m) acclimatizing with a 4-5 hour round-trip hike to Zebra Rocks (4,000m). This optional trek aids altitude adjustment while offering stunning views. Return to the hut for lunch, a relaxed afternoon, and dinner. The extra day boosts your summit success, easing into the “Coca-Cola” route’s rhythm.

Hike 10 km from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,703m) over 6-8 hours, crossing the barren Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. The alpine desert tests your stamina as you reach base camp. After dinner in the hut, rest early, preparing for the midnight summit push. The stark landscape sets the stage for your final ascent.

Start at midnight, climbing 6 km to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) in 6-8 hours via steep scree to witness sunrise at Africa’s highest point. Descend 16 km to Horombo Hut (3,720m) over 5-7 hours, passing Kibo. Celebrate with a meal and sleep in the hut, exhausted but triumphant after the longest day on this straightforward route.

Descend 19 km from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,860m) in 5-7 hours through moorland and rainforest. Collect your summit certificate, bid farewell to your crew, and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha. Reflect on your “Coca-Cola Route” achievement, ending the easiest Kilimanjaro climb with pride and relief.
