Day 1: Arusha to Miriakamba Hut – Trek Begins in the Wild

Drive from Arusha to Momella Gate (1,500m) in Arusha National Park, starting your 10 km trek to Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) over 5-7 hours. Pass giraffes, buffaloes, and monkeys in the lush foothills, guided by an armed ranger. Settle into the hut with dinner, enjoying wildlife views and a gentle ascent perfect acclimatization for Kilimanjaro.

Trek 4 km from Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3,570m) in 3-5 hours, climbing through forest into moorland with views of Meru’s crater and Kilimanjaro. Rest at the hut after lunch, with an optional 1-hour acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m). Dine and sleep early, preparing for the summit push on this less crowded, challenging route.

Start at midnight, trekking 5 km to Socialist Peak (4,566m) in 5-7 hours, summiting at sunrise with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and the crater. Descend 9 km to Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) over 6-8 hours via Saddle Hut, passing volcanic landscapes. Celebrate with dinner at the hut, your challenging ascent complete a stellar warm-up for Kilimanjaro’s heights.

Descend 10 km from Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate (1,500m) in 3-5 hours through the park’s wildlife-rich trails. Spot more animals en route, then transfer back to Arusha, arriving by midday. Rest or depart, carrying memories of Meru’s summit and its perfect acclimatization benefits less crowded, yet rewarding.
